Titan Soccer Stars Receive 2007 UDM President's Awards -- Friday, April 20 2007
A pair of soccer standouts - defender Jason Massoglia (Troy, MI/Athens) and forward Mary Parker (Troy, MI/Athens) - received the 2007 President's Awards as the Titans' most outstanding senior student-athletes Thursday at the annual UDM President's Athletic and Academic Honors Luncheon.
Massoglia has been named first-team All-Horizon League in both of the last two soccer seasons. Off the field, he was named Academic All-Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association, and Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
With 111 career points, Parker is the fourth-leading scorer in Titan women's soccer history. Off the field, she was named an Academic All-American this year by CoSIDA. She was also third in the voting for CoSIDA National Player of the Year.
Several other major individual awards were presented on Thursday as well. Junior golfer Mark Sommerfeld (Waterloo, ON/Bluevale) and junior softball player Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph, ON/St. James) received the men's and women's Titan Club Awards for athletic and academic excellence. Each of them was named the 2006 Horizon League Player of the Year in their respective sports. Also, junior golfer Mikhial Pasic (London, ON/H.B. Beal) and sophomore soccer defender Melanie Slusher (Sterling Heights, MI/Stevenson) were awarded the Fr. Norbert Huetter, S.J. Award for attitude, dedication and leadership; and fencer Craig Budzynski (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Northern) and tennis player Annie Moore (St. Clair, MI/St. Clair), a pair of sophomores, were named Titan Newcomers of the Year for 2005-06.

Retired athletic department staff member Lucious Broom, Jr. was honored with the Titan Spirit Award, while senior women's soccer midfielder Alex Moraca (Sault Saint Marie, ON/St. Mary's) was presented the Horizon League Sportsmanship Award.
The Titan women's tennis squad received the Team Excellence Award for having the highest grade point average (3.53) among all of UDM's 16 varsity teams. The tennis team also received the Horizon League "Raise Your Sights" Award for having the top GPA among all UDM women's teams, while the men's golf team was honored by the conference for having the highest men's team GPA (3.48).
Tennis Scores 6-1 Win Over Wright State -- Friday, April 20 2007
The UDM tennis team got back on the winning track by scoring a 6-1 triumph over visiting Wright State in Horizon League action on Wednesday.
After sweeping all three doubles contests to take the doubles point, UDM came just one win short of sweeping the singles matches. That came at the No. 1 singles position, where sophomore Annie Moore (St. Clair, MI/St. Clair) could not overcome Raider senior Tiffani Foster (6-4, 6-3).
In doubles, Moore teamed with Aneta Maricevic (Hamilton, ONT/Glendale Secondary), and the No. 1 duo spotted Wright State the first three games before rattling off eight straight for an 8-3 win. Maricevic (pictured) would later post a straight-set win at No. 3 singles to secure the overall match for UDM.
Joining Maricevic in the straight-set singles win column were teammates Ingrid Stensvaag (Palatine, IL/Palatine), Stephanie Hill (Calgary, AB/William Aberhart) and Kelly Davis (Farmington Hills, MI/North Farmington), who found success at the 4, 5 and 6 positions, respectively.
In the day's final match, freshman Svetlana Flankova (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary 21) came from behind for a three-set singles win over WSU's Audra Beckett at the No. 2 post.
Earlier, Flankova partnered with Davis at No. 2 doubles for a quick 8-1 win while Stensvaag paired with Amy Inman (Grand Rapids, MI/Catholic Central) at No. 3 for an 8-2 win that earned the Titans' sweep of all three contests.
All told, each of the seven Titan players scored at least one victory on the day as the team improved to 2-3 in the Horizon League (6-10 overall).

Men's Basketball Adds Illinois Product Harrington For 2007-08 -- Friday, April 20 2007
Head men's basketball coach Perry Watson announced on Wednesday that the Titans had signed junior college transfer Michael Harrington to a National Letter of Intent for the 2007-08 season. Harrington will continue his athletic and academic career at UDM as a junior and have two years of eligibility remaining.
"Michael brings experience to our post position to go along with all of our young, returning post players," said Watson. "He has the ability to score on the block and from the high post. He can defend in the block and on the perimeter. He will also be a presence for us offensively and defensively right away."
Harrington (Country Club Hills, IL/Rich Central) - a 6-8, 230 pound forward - averaged 11 points and seven rebounds per game for Kankakee (IL) Community College last season. He helped the Cavaliers to a 22-8 record, advancing to the NJCAA Region IV Semi-finals. In his final game as a Cav, Harrington led the team with 23 points and 11 rebounds against Highland CC. He will be the second Illinois product on the Detroit roster, joining current sophomore and Chicago native Chris Hayes.
As a team, the Titans finished Watson's 14th season at the UDM helm with an 11-19 record. They will lose just two seniors off the 2007 roster, Muhammad Abdur-Rahim and Ryvon Covile.
Softball Adds Two For 2008 -- Friday, April 20 2007
Head softball coach Bob Wilkerson announced today that he has signed two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2007-08 school year. Outfielders Chelsea Lathrop and Ellen Sinclair have signed to continue their athletic and academic careers at Detroit starting this fall.
"The similarities between these newest Titans are remarkable," said Wilkerson. "First, they are both outstanding student-athletes and they will fit into our program immediately."
Lathrop (Colleyville, TX/Grapevine HS) is the second Texas product to sign with the Titans in the last three years, joining sophomore Jacqueline Nortman who signed in 2005. A member of the Colleyville Chaos summer program, Lathrop will study nursing at UDM.
"Chelsea has a contagious energy about her that will server her well in Detroit," added Wilkerson.
Sinclair (Chatham, ON/Chatham-Kent Secondary) comes to Detroit after a stand out career at Chatham-Kent Secondary and for the Windsor Wildcats summer program where she was coached by Mike Sikora, the father of former Titan Andrea Sikora.
The Canadian Junior National Team selection, who will study environmental engineering at Detroit, joins her sister Jordan as a collegiate softball player. The elder Sinclair starred for four seasons at near by Wayne State.
"Ellen's international experience will help her make the transition to Division I softball," said Wilkerson. "Both of our signings are multi-talented and can play almost anywhere on the field. They open up many options for me as coach when planning the look of next year's team."
The 2007 version of the Titans travel to UIC for a three game set this weekend against the Flames.

(#9) Detroit 75, (#8) Loyola 68 -- Wednesday, March 7 2007
Chicago, Ill. - Detroit had four players in double figures and never trailed in a 75-68 victory over Loyola on Monday evening in the opening round of the 2007 Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship.
Sophomore Sandi Brown led a balanced scoring effort for UDM with 15 points, while junior India Bruster chipped in a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Detroit improves to 5-25 on the year and advances to the quarterfinals to take on top-seeded UW-Green Bay on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET. Loyola finishes the year at 7-21.
Detroit had as strong start to the first half and jumped out to an 18-4 lead. It started with Heather Hatter making two quick baskets and a free throw. Chanica Hall and Joyce Massey put in back-to-back threes and Brown joined in with two jumpers of her own. The Titans cooled off after the fast start, but maintained their lead through a strong defensive effort. With 7:49 left in the half, the Ramblers had only 11 points and Detroit held a 10-point advantage (21-11). Loyola heated up from there, as Maggie McCloskey led them on a 19-12 run to close out the half.
After seeing Loyola pull within two at 36-34 early in the second half, Detroit went on a 17-8 run to build a 53-42 lead keyed by back-to-back threes from Katy Dunlop. Loyola did not give in as McCloskey kept the Ramblers close. LU eventually tied the game at 56 with 6:30 to go. Bruster found the offensive touch late in the half, scoring seven of her 11 points in the last 6:10. A basket by Massey with 2:32 gave the Titans a 69-60 edge and they were able to combine free throws and strong defense to put the game away from there.
The Titans shot 41 percent for the game, including 50.0 percent (15-of-30) in the second half, compared to the Ramblers' 36 percent. In addition to Brown and Bruster, Hall had 13 points to go along with seven assists and seven rebounds. Massey, the Titans leading scorer in the regular season, also notched 10 arker in the contest, the 22nd time she has scored 10-or-more points.
McCloskey led Loyola with 26 points on 10-of-22 shooting, while Jenna Real added 12 and Cierra Thurman had 11. Sophomore Jana Lucas pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
Big Titan Comeback Falls Just Short as YSU Prevails, 82-80, In League Tourney Game -- Wednesday, February 28 2007
The Titans staged a furious rally - actually taking a second-half lead after trailing by 19 points in the first - but in the end, came up just short and lost at Youngstown State, 82-80, in the first round of the Horizon League Championship on Tuesday night.
Detroit lost its second straight game to end the season with an 11-19 record. It's the first time the Titans went 0-1 in Horizon League tournament play since they dropped their opening game back in 1997. With the narrow victory, Youngstown State improved to 14-16 and advanced to Friday's second-round game in Dayton. It was just the second Horizon League tournament win for the Penguins since they joined the conference in 2001.
YSU took the rubber match in the 2007 series with Detroit after each team had previously won on its home court in the regular-season.
Guard Brandon Cotton led the Titans' charge with a career-high 33 points, while Jon Goode (11) and Chris Hayes (10) joined him in double figures for Detroit. YSU guard Keston Roberts nearly matched Cotton with a career-best 31 points of his own, while guard Quin Humphrey - who had scored 36 the last time the two teams met - finished with 19.
Detroit grabbed its only lead of the game, 66-65, with 7:03 left to go, on a Hayes dunk. YSU responded with a 7-2 run to regain control of the contest, but had to weather yet another storm as the Titans tied things up at 77-all with 1:04 remaining on a Brandon Bell three-pointer.
Roberts made a jumper with 0:47 on the clock, then two free throws by John Barber increased the Penguin lead to 81-77. Goode gave the Titans life with four ticks still on the clock when his three-pointer cut the deficit to 81-80, but Humphrey went 1-for-2 from the foul line to end the scoring and, as it turned out, UDM's season.
The Penguins had taken control early, making their first four shots from the field - two of them triples - while the Titans went 0-for-4. That put YSU ahead 10-0 and the Penguins were never headed in the opening 20 minutes. They ended up with a 45-31 lead at the half, going 8-for-12 behind the arc along the way, setting the stage for the Titans' comeback heroics.
The Titans ended up shooting an even .500 from the floor (27-for-54) while YSU hit at a .558 clip (29-for-52. Detroit went 10-for-20 behind the three-point arc and YSU was 9-for-16. The Titans led the battle of the backboards, 31-26.
The game was the last in the careers of UDM's two seniors, All-League center Ryvon Covile and guard Muhammad Abdur-Rahim.
Tennis Sweeps Doubles Matches En Route To 5-2 Win Over Dayton -- Monday, February 26 2007
The Titan tennis team returned to action on Sunday morning when it hosted Dayton and, after sweeping all three doubles contests to open play, UDM fought off a Flyers' comeback, holding on for a 5-2 overall victory.
Freshman Ingrid Stensvaag (Palatine, IL/Palatine) teamed with sophomore Kelly Davis (Farmington Hills, MI/North Farmington) at No. 2 doubles, where the duo scored an 8-7 (7) win to make it a clean sweep in doubles action for UDM, after the Titans' No. 1 and No. 3 tandems had posted 8-5 and 8-3 triumphs, respectively.
Then Stensvaag took the court at No. 5 singles with the Titans needing just one more singles win to seal the overall outcome. Her 6-3, 6-2 victory over Dayton's Mackenzie Hoops clinched the match for the home side.
"I knew Amy (Inman) and I had to step up and get a win for our team," Stensvaag commented. "Archie (assistant coach Mojares) and the girls kept me really positive throughout the second set, which really made it a team win."
Shortly after Stensvaag's win, teammate Amy Inman (Grand Rapids, MI/Catholic Central) came from behind for a successful three-set showing at No. 6 singles. Teammates Annie Moore and Svetlana Flankova had earlier scored straight-set victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles slots for UDM. All told, Detroit took eight of the 10 matches contested on Sunday.
The win, Detroit's third straight, improved the squad's overall dual match record to 4-5 on the season. The team will take a break from action until March 9 when UDM opens Horizon League action at UIC.
